Strategic Voting and Social Networks: (Doctoral Consortium)

چکیده
The effects of social networks are pervasive in everyday life, from the subtle effects on mundane, momentto-moment choices, to political revolutions driven through social media. The last few years have seen a rapid growth of interest in this area from researchers within artificial intelligence and multiagent systems communities. Until recently, relatively little attention has been paid on understanding the effects of these networks on the social aggregation of opinions. My main research question I wish to consider is the impact of social networks on social choice. Specifically, how does communication within social networks affect the strategic voting behavior of the population, and how does it affect the voting outcome?

متن کاملThe Echo Chamber: Strategic Voting and Homophily in Social Networks
We propose a model where voters are embedded in a social network. Each voter observes the ballots of her neighbors in the network, from which she infers the likely outcome of the election. Each voter may then revise her vote strategically, to maximize her expected utility. Our work focuses on plurality voting, where strategic voting is a major concern. We show that in practice, strategization i...

There is more to strategic voting than simply avoiding wasting one’s vote if one is liberated from the corset of studying voting behavior in plurality systems. Mixed electoral systems provide different voters with diverse incentives to cast a strategic vote. They not only determine the degree of strategic voting, but also the kind of strategies voters employ. Strategic voters employ either a was...

متن کاملNormative Agents for Real-world Scenarios (Doctoral Consortium)
Norms are an important part of human social systems, governing many aspects of group decision-making. Yet many popularly used social models neglect to model normative effects on human behavior, relying on simple probabilistic and majority voting models of influence diffusion. Within the multi-agent research community, the study of norm emergence, compliance, and adoption has resulted in new arc...
